School Information
The construction of Houghtaling Elementary School began in the spring of 1960. The site selected was the Tongass View area now known as the Carlana area. On August 27, 1961, Houghtaling was dedicated with five classrooms ready for use. Those students attending the school would all be “walkers.” As years progressed and the need for more classrooms arose, the rest of the school was completed. Presently there are more than 20 classrooms with over 400 students in attendance, arriving from all parts of the island.
Houghtaling Elementary was named after E.B. “Burt” Houghtaling, owner and operator of Log Cabin Grocery. Mr. Houghtaling was also a 25-year member of the Ketchikan School Board. Jack Finch, the Superintendent of schools and C.L. Montgomery, the first principal of Houghtaling, established a tradition that is still carried on today, that of pride and excellence in academics and other activities.
The real beauty of Houghtaling is found through the work taking place in the around the school as students and educators work together to create a rich academic and social atmosphere that supports children’s growth. Houghtaling Elementary School is a community of learners. We are all here to learn, grow, and become good citizens.
Our school has adopted the B’s Approach to Success. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Here. The five B’s are designed to create a peaceful climate of cooperation, academic excellence, respect and safety at Houghtaling Elementary.
